What is a Tort?

Answer

These are wrongful acts or an infringement of a right (other than under contract law) leading to civil legal liability (as opposed to criminal liability).  Torts can be:

  • Intentional (e.g., hitting a person on purpose)

  • Negligent (e.g., causing an accident by failing to obey traffic rules)

  • Strict Liability (e.g., liability for making and selling defective products)
