How Do I Search Bloomberg Law Dockets?

Answer

Sign in to https://www.bloomberglaw.com and click the gray 'Litigation' dropdown menu near the top of the page.  From the 'Litigation' dropdown, select Dockets Search.   The direct link is https://www.bloomberglaw.com/start#advanced-search/dockets_v3.  (You can add it to your Favorites so it's always at the top by clicking the Favorite star icon at the top.)

From this advanced search docket page, you can use keywords, judge names, party names, dates, etc.  I usually start by narrowing it to the court I want and then add in the other information I know.  There is a specific entry for searching by docket number, but I don't recommend using it.  It's very finicky about the formatting.

There are federal and state dockets included, but coverage varies.  It has almost all the federal courts and has been adding state courts slowly the last couple of years.  There is a chart with coverage information https://www.bloomberglaw.com/dockets/coverage.

Keep in mind, just because it shows you the complete docket doesn't mean that every document is available online.  If it says View, you're good.  Some documents will say Request and you have to see if they can get it.  They will email you either way.  If they can't, the only way to get the document is to contact the clerk of court where the case was heard.  There may be costs associated with having a clerk of court send copies.

Also, once you find the docket you want, be sure to click the green Update Docket button.  New documents may be available that weren't the last time the docket was updated.
